How to Get a Nespresso promo code, What to buy & How to Fix

I’m no George Clooney…but I do share his affinity with good coffee, particularly at the end of an evening meal with a well-reviewed supermarket wine. I’ve often written about how Nespresso machines offer a middle ground between instant coffee (via the kettle) and bean-to-cup home grinding coffee machines. The Nespresso machines on offer can often be purchased using a Nespresso promo code or voucher deal and there are also free machine offers. They’re not overpriced and can offer users the chance to experiment with different strengths and tastes.

I adored my Delonghi Magnifica Bean to Cup machine, but it was huge and took up a large amount of counter space. Nespresso machines, on the whole, tend to be conveniently sized for most kitchens and are designed to be ideal for those on the go – so I switched to a Nespresso Prodigio coffee machine to try when I spotted an offer allowing me to claim 100 free capsules that Nespresso sometimes run.

You can read more about the kind of machines on offer using a Nespresso promo code and the kinds of drinks you can make with them in my article on where to buy Nespresso Hot Chocolate Pods and capsules

Where to find a Nespresso promo code, offers and free capsule claims

It varies throughout the years, but when buying a Nespresso machine you can often access and claim 100 free complimentary capsules. For example, at the time of typing this article, the Nespresso website has a VertuoPlus coffee machine on offer for £79 (usually £179) complete with 100 capsules that you can claim for free and 2 months of coffee credit.

Now, this is a great deal, but it’s not exclusive to the Nespresso website meaning you can get additional discounts. You can order the exact same Nespresso VertuoPlus from companies like Currys, Robert Dyas, John Lewis, Lakeland, AO.com, Amazon and more. In fact, I found a deal for the Nespresso VertuoPlus on Currys website for only £59 with the free 100 coffee pods offer included – another £20 off! Add on to this the chance to use cashback websites and money off coupons and you could potentially knock the cost down even further.

You can also explore other group buying websites in order to unlock Nespresso promo codes and options. For example, many of the main tabloid newspaper websites have 20% to 25% promo codes and discounts for Nespresso on their websites. Nespresso also offers subscriptions and machine deals where you can buy a Nespresso coffee machine for £1 using a promo code. There are some great examples of this on the Groupon website which are worth exploring if you are looking to find a great deal on a new Nespresso coffee machine.

Pods and capsules for Nespresso devices can be found in a number of places other than direct from Nespresso. I highly suggest checking out the Starbucks Pike Place Nespresso capsules. They are beautifully balanced and can often be found on offer in supermarkets in the UK. For example, the ones pictured in this article were on a Buy One Get One Free offer in my local Tesco which happened to coincide with a cashback offer on the Shopmium App -making them FREE!

How to descale a Nespresso, recycle pods and fix a coffee machine that’s not working using the manual.

Whilst Nespresso machines aren’t going to break the bank (particularly if you use a Nespresso promo code), you will need to look after them as they take quite a beating when in regular use. Living in an area where there’s particularly hard water means I regularly descale most kitchen devices that use water. Most Nespresso descaling instructions included with their coffee machines are easy to follow, but you don’t have to use Nespresso’s own descaling kits to keep your machine working.

To stop the build-up of limescale in your device, I’d recommend attempting to descale your Nespresso every couple of months and this should be the first thing you try if your Nespresso machine is not working. In order to do this you will need the following:

  1. A descaler – the chief ingredient in removing limescale from your Nespresso machine’s pipes
  2. A cleaning capsule – specially designed Nespresso pod-shaped cleaners
  3. A supply of fresh water – for rinsing after the descaling process

The kits on offer from various suppliers vary in terms of approach. For example, some contain descaler, cleaning pods separately, some all in one pack, or there’s even the option of a universal descaling cleaner. I’ve set out the three below for illustrative purposes.

How to descale a Nespresso machine without a kit.

Descaling without a kit also an option. It’s just as effective, but a massive amount cheaper in general – particularly if you are a heavy coffee consumer drinking more than 100 cups a month.

To descale your Nespresso coffee machine without a  specific descaler kit you will need citric acid, lemon juice or vinegar. If using citric acid, you will need to mix one part citric acid to 20 parts fresh water. This will give you a basic descaling solution. Alternatively, you can mix 50/50 solutions of lemon juice and water or vinegar and water.

Once you have your homemade descaling solution, you can use them by following the instructions below – just as if you were using a normal Nespresso descaling kit! The only difference that is worth noting is you must run through five lots of fresh water after using a vinegar solution. This is because of the strength of the vinegar and the amount of rinsing needed to take the taste away from the machine.

How to use a Nespresso descaling kit

First off, it is not a great idea to descale your Nespresso machine when you’re likely to want a coffee soon. This is because the process can take around 30 minutes and leave a slight taste. If you’re not planning a coffee in the next hour, you’re good to go…

  1. To start, make sure your Nespresso, Krups or Magimix coffee machine is empty. This includes both the water tank and the capsule/pod collection bay.
  2. Once you’ve done that, fill the water tank with a solution of one part descaling product to three parts fresh water.
  3. Turn on your Nespresso machine and press down both buttons for three seconds. Depending on your the model of your machine this may vary, but it’s usually the ‘large’ and ‘small’ cup buttons that are needed. For the Prodigio version, you’ll need to hold down three buttons.
  4. Wait for your Nespresso machine to stop making noise.
  5. Press the ‘large cup’ button and hold it in to let the entire contents of the coffee machine’s water tank empty. You may need a large container to catch this.
  6. According to the instructions of the descaler you’re using, you may need to repeat the above steps a number of times.
  7. Finally, thoroughly rinse clean the water tank with fresh water and then allow your machine to go through two more full tanks of clean water by refilling the tank and holding down the ‘large cup’ button on your coffee machine to allow the draining process.

NOTE: You will need to press down both buttons, just as you did at the start, in order to exit the descaling process on Magimix, Krups and Nespresso coffee pod machines.

How can Nespresso pods be recycled?

This is really simple – you can use CollectPlus as a service to deliver your capsules back to Nespresso for recycling.  It’s worth noting that you have to have at least 200 capsules in order to send them back, but it’s entirely free. In order to use this service, you have to pick up a bag from your nearest Nespresso Boutique or you can call the freephone number 0800 442 442.

If you return your coffee capsules to Nespresso, they are split using a recycling process which separates the foil from the grains and residue left inside. The foil is melted down to make ingots which can be used for making other metallic products like drinks cans and tin foil. Similarly, the coffee grounds are used in all manner of organic repurposing, including use as a soil improver.

One of the negatives of a Nespresso machine is the number of pods and capsules produced as waste. But now you know that they can be recycled sustainably there’s less to worry about.

Nespresso user manuals and common faults for each model

No matter how well you care for your Nespresso coffee machine there’s a chance that things may go wrong. This is where the use of a manual or troubleshooting guide comes in particularly useful. Included below is a list of the most common issues and models on the Nespresso range. I’ve also attempted to include links to the most common Nespresso coffee machine user manuals and troubleshooting guides available on the net, either as PDFs or online documents.

Nespresso VirtuoPlus and Virtuo Next

A few years back, Nespresso started to experiment with some different capsule types. Instead of the typical pod shape, they started to introduce a curved dome capsule referred to as the Nespresso Vertuo.  Due to the fact these capsules were a different shape, the machine range needed to be increased to cater for them. Thus, Nespresso introduced the Nespresso Vertuo range of coffee machines. These coffee machines are, in general, narrow looking and contemporary in design while being ideal for home-usage. One of the best things about the Vertuo Nespresso range is the rich crema that is produced in a coffee cup as a result of the additional extraction pressure.
